Pocket Reduction Surgery

Pocket Reduction Surgery in Borger, TX

When gum disease has advanced past what a deep cleaning can handle, the pockets between your teeth and gums get too deep to clean at home — and that lets bacteria continue doing damage to the bone underneath. Pocket reduction surgery (also called flap surgery) cleans out those pockets and helps the gum tissue reattach more tightly to the tooth.

What the procedure involves

The area is numbed with local anesthetic. Dr. Robertson gently lifts the gum tissue away from the tooth to get direct access to the root surfaces and the infected pockets beneath. He clears out the bacteria, plaque, and tartar that have accumulated, and if the underlying bone has developed rough or irregular surfaces, those are smoothed so bacteria has fewer places to take hold. The gum tissue is then placed back against the tooth and secured with stitches.

Recovery and what comes next

Expect some tenderness and sensitivity for a few days afterward. Dr. Robertson may prescribe an antimicrobial rinse or a short course of antibiotics to support healing. The real long-term success comes from what happens at home after — consistent brushing and flossing, plus regular periodontal maintenance cleanings, keep the disease from coming back. Without that follow-through, the pockets can redeepen.
